Supporting Effective Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Vermont Schools

Although the VMI is best known for the flagship VMI Masters Program, we offer a number of other services designed to support mathematics teachers, school and district leaders and schools and districts. All of our services are dedicated to our long held vision of building high-quality mathematics instruction across systems. To this end, all VMI offerings focus on both individual teacher and systemic growth.

VMI Services

The VMI Masters Program

The VMI masters program is a comprehensive, three-year professional development program dedicated to providing current and aspiring mathematics teacher leaders with the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead, support and inspire systemic change in their schools and districts.

Recertification Courses

The VMI offers recertification courses for practicing mathematics teachers. These courses represent a variety of mathematics topics targeted at all grade levels. Classes include;

  • Mathematical Coherence in the Elementary Grades: Foundational Understandings for Teaching Students Who Struggle
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Linear Algebra
  • Advanced Probability

VMI Potholders

District Partnerships

The VMI works with individual schools and districts to support high-quality mathematics instruction and the learning of important mathematics for all students. This work is tailored to the unique needs of the school or district. Options include:

  • Identifying district strengths and needs regarding mathematics teaching and learning
  • Collaborative long term planning with school/district administration and mathematics leaders to design specific PD opportunities that best meet school/district needs. PD offerings can be specifically designed to target the needs of mathematics coaches, mathematics interventionists, instructional assistants who focus on mathematics instruction, school/district administrators, special educators, and classroom teachers.
  • PD can take a variety of forms including, courses, mentoring during the school day, topic specific seminars, and more

The VMI Masters Program

Twenty Years of The VMI Masters Program

The VMI Master’s Program is a three-year, comprehensive mathematics professional development program for K-8 aspiring and current mathematics teacher leaders. Now in its twentieth year, the VMI is dedicated to supporting highly effective mathematics instruction so that all children can learn the rigorous mathematics needed for success in higher education and the workplace. 

Since its inception in 1999, the VMI has partnered with local school districts, the Vermont Agency of Education, business representatives and Vermont colleges and universities. These partnerships ensure the VMI Masters Program stays relevant to current school and district needs.

VMI Staff, Instructors, and Mentors

Mathematicians from Vermont and beyond—representing all Vermont state colleges, St. Michael’s, Westfield State, Middlebury College, and UVM—join award winning Vermont mathematics educators to develop the VMI programs, instruct VMI Masters Program courses and mentor participants. This partnership of mathematics educators and mathematicians infuses all aspects of VMI and allows the VMI to bring high-level mathematics and high-leverage instructional approaches together in a unique way.

A Few Program Details

For each of the three calendar years participants enroll in four, 3-credit graduate level courses: two during the summer and one each semester during the academic year. Classes are held in the Burlington area. During the three years, VMI Masters Program participants:

  • deeply examine the mathematics content central to high quality mathematics instruction and meaningful leadership.
  • study effective mathematics instructional practices, skills and concepts.
  • read, understand and interpret current educational research and conduct individual action research
  • develop leadership knowledge and skills needed to support systemic change

Fieldwork, including work with a VMI mentor, runs concurrently with each course.  

Upon completing the three-year VMI program, a teacher will have earned 36 graduate credits and completed the requirements for a Master of Education (M.Ed) Degree from Southern New Hampshire University
