The Vermont Mathematics Initiative (VMI) is dedicated to improving mathematics teaching and learning through a variety of initiatives.
These include:
Partnering with teachers, schools, districts, state organizations, and institutions of higher learning to support deep mathematics learning for all students.
Participants learn from mathematicians representing Northern Vermont University, St. Michael’s College, University of Vermont, Westport St. and, Middlebury College.
VMI award winning mathematics educators have decades of experience working in all areas of mathematics education.
VMI is celebrating its 22nd year and continues the traditions established by its founders of providing comprehensive professional development in mathematics with the overarching goal of systemic improvement in mathematics teaching and learning.
A comprehensive 3-year masters program focusing on effective mathematics instruction for all students, mathematics content, teacher leadership, and mathematics education research.
Courses designed for mathematics teachers addressing a variety of mathematical content and instructional topics.
Working with schools and districts to design math PD experiences for teachers and leaders and support systemic change.
“After twenty eight years of teaching, VMI is without a doubt the single most important experience in my professional life….a truly unique opportunity for teachers to strengthen their abilities to teach mathematics.”
“Being part of VMI has been a life-changing experience and I will definitely take all that I
learned and apply it to my teaching.”
“I am always looking for ways to better engage students in math and to ground my teaching in a conceptually based understanding of math ideas. I have found just the professional community I was looking for at VMI.”
“VMI has helped me build confidence in my math abilities and move my teaching career forward in exciting ways. I am so appreciative of all I have learned so far and am looking forward to next semester.”
“I have really enjoyed meeting with and getting to know my mentor, over the past couple of months. I feel very grateful to have someone else “in my corner” as I navigate these new waters of education during these unprecedented times of the pandemic. She has provided me with wonderful, useful resources already and I can tell she has a wealth of knowledge to share.”
“Wow, what a pleasure to have taken part in such a well thought out and organized program. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with both Fran and Bill .”
Wow! It is the end of my first semester with VMI and, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I could not be more grateful for my experience so far!
“No one told me VMI was going to be easy, but it’s so satisfying when something difficult finally clicks”.
“I can’t express strongly enough how much I miss being a part of VMI. My three years with VMI were the best three years I have had in my 24 years of teaching. The collegiality and collaboration with passionate educators dedicated to doing what is right for students as they learn mathematics was unprecedented for me.”
Since its inception in 1999, the VMI has been dedicated to improving student learning in mathematics for all students and to building leadership capacity in Vermont Schools. Presently, we are expanding this work into New Hampshire. Interested in learning more about our Masters Program or the other services we provide to mathematics educators and leaders?
