Mathematics as a Second Language (MSL) – 3 credits
This course fosters a deep understanding of the foundational themes of arithmetic and the connections among arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. A central focus of MSL is the role of language in developing conceptual understanding in both arithmetic and algebra. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive preferred consideration if they choose to apply to VMI’s master’s program, and the credits earned will transfer into the program.
Dates: synchronous classes will take place on the following Saturdays (9am – 1pm): Jan 17 and Apr 4 and the following Wednesdays (4pm – 7pm): Jan 28, Feb 11, Mar 4 & 18, Apr 5, 15, and 29. Number Theory – 2 or 3 credits
This course introduces teachers to number theory, exploring patterns and relationships among positive integers. Participants deepen their understanding of the base-ten system and investigate problem-solving opportunities across the K-12 curriculum rooted in Number Theory.
This course may be taken for 2 credits or 3 credits by opting into a one-credit classroom lab experience. For more information about the 1 credit add-on, contact Kathryn Delay ([email protected]). -
Essential Mathematics of the Elementary Grades – 3 credits
This course builds teacher knowledge about the ways in which students construct essential mathematical understanding of the major, overarching themes of multiplicative and fractional reasoning. Participants will explore the learning progressions associated with these critical mathematical ideas and understand the models and strategies students use to build a deep understanding of the associated concepts.Download the flyer for Number Theory and Essential Mathematics here or click here to register
